KRISTIANSAND ART MUSEUM AND CULTURAL SCHOOL

TYPOLOGY< Public, Educational

STATUS<[2016] Competition

LOCATION> Kristiansand, Norway

Main urban concept

With the Art museum one has the opportunity to connect the new design to the existing Silo with its playful forms, reminiscent of one of the paintings of Kristiansand 's foremost artist, Odd Tandberg's series of compositions.

As the design of the Art museum reveals itself, one is also visually reminded

of the nearby KIlden. The manner in which these exhibition spaces have been stacked on top of eah other is too a subtle reminder of the different graphic methods that Tandberg once used in his 'serigrafi' dialogues and one tries to emulate his constant endeavour to research and experiment in the unusual forms withits strong colors and non -figurative forms.

As Odd Tandberg once said: It is the not the large sizes of his paintings that mattered most but the processes that were more pertinent here. A useful statement here indeed that may help us to

understand more and respect his works here in the proposed design of the Art museum.

Equally there is a constant reminder that the Art museum is not isolated but it is joined to the larger urban cultural field of activity. We have the ideal opportunity here to locate the Glow box in the right position to capture the sunlight and to have at its command the views over the Harbour area as well.

The essential part of this concept is to place correctly the Kunstmuseum with regards to the Harbour views. The visitors can for example view the sea from the Café at ground level. The visitors will also have also the chance too to view the magnificent views southwards and across the new Bykanal.

Wind and Daylight concept

As part of the strategy to wind protect this area, the future extension of the Kunstmuseum is placed here behind the Silo in accordance with the recommendations offered by organisers of this competition.

The large one level block between the Silo and the Kunstmuseum counteracts the prevailing SV winds. The need to protect the square will obviously be a challenge and it is therefore further proposed that a roof garden be placed on top of the block in order to soften the winds.

Out of respect to the Silo no new building is envisaged on top of the Silo (or on level 6) and only the bridge joins the Art museum to the Silo and the cultural school.( the administration for the Art museum has been placed on the top two levels of the Silo). There is much flexibility here in the art museum with its intake of daylighting and one has also the opportunity to let in new daylight into the Silo.

Delivery area

Part of the Art museum area (the varemottak) is located underground in order to save space thereby giving enough breathing space to this new Squareand to the entrances .The entrances to both buildings will be made more visible.

Materials

The architecture of the Kunstmuseum here is simple with its diffused glass elevations and the lighting within the glass walls will change colors at night.

The glass elevations are generous, robust, practical

and easy to maintain. We can therefore call this Art museum the new Glow box. It glows and pulsates at night thus creating a dynamic object of interest. The red glass reminds one of Tandberg' s painting and is a visual reference to one of his works.

Vegetation

Part of the essential concept is to use vegetation that will not only improve the energy ratings here but it can also help the visitors in terms of wind protection .Research has also shown that the benefits of having vegetation are enormous and it can reduce stress. Therefore it is

proposed a whole series of planting should be placed in the Bykanal area wherever it is possible and along the south side of the art museum as well as the front side of the new hotel.

The contextual design of the Art museum

The Art museum is therefore mainly designed to be iconic and can be seen

from afar. It will also enhance the residential part of the new reguleringsplan and add value and quality to this part of town. This is a place to come to, to engage culturally and to be inspired.

It will also be a place of ART and a place to explore and dream in.

The cultural connection to the Kilden and the outside spaces

One can continue the walkway in front of the existing Kilden to the Bykanal. The public will therefore enjoy the views outside and during the intervals of the various performances at the black box.It would be considered logical to maintain the cultural front to this the part of the Harbour here. The Silo has three concert halls and it is proposed that there is as little demolition work as possible inside the Silo, out of respect to Aasland & Korsmo's design from 1935.

.The Silo, the Art Museum and Kilden theatre and concert hall will create an

attractive meeting point between the Kanalbyen and Kvadraturen. The main idea is join both the Kilden and the black box here with th west facing promenade. The public will have the opportunity to sit outside here and there is a landscape initiative on the north side of the Kilden. It is proposed to set up a playful area in Colletts plass with such activities as climbing, cycling and

other various improvised activities for the benefit of everyone.

Elsewhere one has the placement of the new Hotel and new residential flats on the East side on Sjlystveien facing directly the sea views. The visitors of the Hotel will and the new residents will also have the opportunity to enjoy the sea views across.

Energy considerations

As examples of good energy use, this design proposes the use of Solar panels onthe roof top of the Silo (level 6) and to install a roof garden on top of the Kunstmuseum.

Traffic routes to this area

The urban connections with its cycle routes and traffic flows are important and it is proposed that the cycle routes shall be located on the East side of the Square that connects the old town to the Bykanal. Furthermore there is the placement of the bus stop nearby, the taxi stand /parking for HC is to be located between the Kilden and the Silo and it is possible for good street connections around th Square here. The endeavour is to ensure ease of bus and car traffic here and one can examine this issue further later in the second stage of the competition. Equally the open new Square ensures the ease of access for the fire emergency services.

Area use ( arealdisposisjon)

The planned solutions for both the art museum and the cultural school

within the silo are planned in such a way that there is good samspill between the inner life of the school, the museum, the outside spaces and the local society- with the result that there will be a strong sense of belonging to this area especially by the school children. A good working environment is desirable for all the employees here. Everyone should be made to feel welcome here.

Flexibility of space

One of the key aspects of the concept here to consider carefully is the flexible use of space, in both the silo and the art museum. The series of rooms within the silo for example will have good daylight along clear circulation routes. Inside the art museum one has the possibiity to interchange the various functions inside with for example the placement of the Auditorium at ground level next to the entrance. This is an issue that can be further examined later in the second stage of the competition.

Bæresystem ( art museum)

This system of construction is simple; steel columns, steel beams

and concrete floor (use of hulldekker) will ensure a rational construction and the easy installations. This system of construction will guarantee a short period of construction (montasjetid) and which will result in low costs of building.
