Skogfinsk museum competition, Norway
The Museum endeavors to be the embodiment of the Skogfinsk history and its identity.
The overall aim is to allow the design of this Museum to enhance its functions through its architectural forms especially of the roof that relate strongly to the landscape and the river and at the same time through its use of the wooden materials.
The Museum intends to display an open, inspiring and positive impression that will make this place inviting. The wide range of activities ensures that the wider public can easily access and enjoy this Museum, while simultaneously create a living centre for the understanding and research of the Norwegian Skogfinsk's culture and history.
Plan concept
The idea is to create passive house roof angled at various points by lines running from west to east, following the natural slope of the site, under which the Museum is located.
There is a terrace on the east side that offers one a panoramic view of the river and the countryside surrounding this Museum. The terrace is located next to the cafe.
The exhibition space creates a link between the entrance and the river with the views towards the landscape. It is possible that visitors can have a limited view of the exhibition space from outside and have an idea of the Museum's function.
A maximum of modularity is foreseen for all the working areas on the western side and a double height space of the exhibition space ensures maximum views to the exterior while giving the users bright and generous daylighting.
To the North, stage 2 is incorporated into the design which can be built at a later stage (as has been advised in the competition program).
Inside one has the use of the 'Knutepunkt', an important meeting point where the shop, reception, the entrance to the exhibitions and the Auditorium can easily be accessed.
Next to the Auditorium one has the meeting rooms (both large and small) and which can be enlarged at will. The library is positioned next to the exhibition spaces and which has views to the river embankment.
Sustainability
The museum uses carbon-zero technology, making this building 100% sustainable, with various energy efficient devices that integrate this construction to the local environment. The main concept is to provide an independent module based project that enhances the local chosen site rather than to exploit it.
Nature of materials
In accordance with the design concept, the essential prerequisites are that the structural framework shall have features which contribute to the immediate area and welcome the new visitors as well as the museum staff, offering everyone comfort and rest. The objective is to make this project as green as possible and to utilize the natural building materials effectively. The design of this assembly is envisaged in a such a way as to allow the constant visual connection to the outside, to the river and to the Finnetunet nearby while simultaneously create a sense of comfort and joy at this museum.
Wooden elevations
Wooden boards of natural timber envelop this Museum creating an irregular rhythm both on the eastern and western sides. On the eastern side the intention is to keep the natural rough aspects of the wood (taking its inspiration from the surrounding woods) and its intention is to keep the various untreated wooden claddings in order to highlight the natural aspects of wood. Much of the inspiration for the building details came from the traditional Skogfinsk huts.
Construction
The ambition is to emulate nature and to connect this Museum to the immediate environment. Assembled from local wood, laminated frames will support the exterior timber cladding.
In essence, this project shall serve as an inspiration for future visitors and the local, staff who will desire to use the facilities on the beautiful site.
This sustainable structural framework using local, natural materials is a genuine attempt to reconnect with nature, using various Skogfinsk traditions and to support the green initiative. The period of time required to construct this museum will be short and the various module systems can easily be incorporated into the museum.
In the final analysis, this Museum offers the local inhabitants, the staff and the new visitors the opportunity to enjoy the Skogfinsk culture and its history, away from the stresses of the urban lifestyle and which is compatible with the natural surrounding area.
