TYPOLOGY< Public, Educational
STATUS<[2016] Competition
LOCATION> Lima, Peru
General description
MAIN CONCEPT of the new extension to the Exposition
With the new art museum extension one has the unique opportunity to architecturally enhance the whole museum in the park.
The new proposal aims to bring joy and a sense of excitement tothe museum with a particular emphasis on the garden likeatmosphere in the whole park. This will improve the Remic district's cultural value and quality to this part of the city.
Noise and air protection concept.
(see diagram 05)
As one of the measures to protect visitors, the new extension of the museum offers the advantage of its protection against noise pollution below ground. The users and the students can remain undisturbed by the disruptive traffic noises from above. The new roof garden landscape will also help to soften the noise pollution.
Relationship to the Exposition
Out of respect to the Exposition no new large high rise building is envisaged.
The view to the western side of this magnificent building must remain uninterrupted.
The intention is to discreetly build in the new staircase and the two (plus one goods lift) lifts inside the new Contemporary Art wing, tomake way for the access downstairs. The visitors to the Park
can then view the new gallery space below.
Expropriation of land by Metro authorities
In the case of such expropriation, the strategy is to include the new station's vestibule into the plan at level U 03. There it is possible to absorb the planned new station and its exit. However much will depend on the final design of the new Metro station and it is important that this new design is well integrated into the new extension. Therefore the planned layout of level U03 and U02 should remain flexible.
Materials
The architecture of the new extension here is simple with its glass elevation at the lower level
and the lighting within the glass walls will change colors at night. The glas elevation fronting the plaza is generous, robust, practical and easy to maintain. Concrete is mainly used for the exterior walls.
Vegetation
Part of the essential concept is to use vegetation that will not only improve the energy ratings
here but it can also help the visitors in terms of better air quality and thus create a sense of
harmony. Research has shown that the benefits of having vegetation are enormous and it can help reduce stress. Therefore it is proposed a whole new series of planting should be installed in this urban park.
Energy considerations
As examples of good energy use, this design proposes the use of small solar panels on top of the Exposition and the landscaped garden on top of the new extension will improve the energy
ratings (BREEAM). This approach will introduce a cost effective means of bringing sustainable value to this new extension.
Traffic routes to and around this area
The urban connections with its cycle routes and traffic flows are important and it is proposed
that the new bicycle cycle routes in the park are implemented. A sense of fun may thus arise from using these bicycle lanes and the city council of Lima may wish to install a rent a bike scheme here later. One will also have the placement of the new bus stop nearby. The taxi stands / parking for drivers with wheelchairs are to be located on the south western side of the park and it should be possible to have good street connections around this area here. The endeavour is to ensure ease of bus and car traffic and one can examine this issue further later in the second stage of the competition.
Equally the open new area should ensure the ease of access for the fire emergency services.
