EXTENSION TO ALVAR AALTO MUSEUM

TYPOLOGY< Public, Educational, Shop

STATUS<[2016] Competition

LOCATION> Jyvaestkylae, Finland

The design proposes a low roof line, in keeping with the pre-existing two buildings.

This design offers an ideal opportunity to experience the garden behind the extension. Wheelchair access has been given prominence here, with a new lift inside the existing Alvar Aalto Museum and a new ramp from the Central Museum.

The design utilizes elements of Aalto's architectural style with, for example, the extension to the water basins outside through the use of curved walls. The plan has an open floor area that allows for flexibility and the three workstations can be placed anywhere. It is possible to walk on top of the roof from the garden area in order to enjoy the views across the square, with access to the roofs of both museums.

The construction site has a natural slope towards the back and one may optimize this area as a garden.

The versatile use of this space incorporates a museum shop on the first level, beneath which storage and technical facilities are provided. The technical room has its own entrance.
