Connection to Viking ship museum

Setting out to capture the essence of Viking ship history, the intention is to highlight the relationship between the existing Viking Ship Museum, the new extension and the nearby forests on the western side.

As the philosopher George Berkeley once said, Esse est percipi to be is to be perceived, the spiral ramp here is therefore a strong metaphysical gesture, ready to be perceived, which connects with the former Viking history. This is accomplished in a manner which respects the existing Museum, not in any way competing with it but strongly connecting to it.

One could say that the spiral represents the transition from the world of the past to the world of the living today, and is considered as representative of Viking mythology, a sign too of the once great Viking craftsmanship.

Moreover the long glass on the western elevation allows one an unparalleled view of the forests. The origin of ship building is exemplified by the use of wood as a natural building material.

The forest also acts as a guardian to this museum and the new extension.

Ultimately the focus is placed upon the public need to relate to this area. This proposal is therefore a Forum which facilitates socializing and the interactions between various groups of people, to engage both buildings through its use of the spiral ramp.
