LOCATION> Riga, Latvia

Tirgonu Iela 4 star Hotel, Riga

The four star Hotel endeavors to be the embodiment of the Riga’s history and its identity.

The overall aim is to allow the design of this Hotel to enhance its functions through its architectural forms especially of the outer curving ceramic tile wall that relates strongly to Doma Laukums and at the same time through its use of the white stucco material facing Tirgonu Iela.

The Hotel intends to give an open, inspiring and positive impression that will make this place inviting in keeping with the historic centre. The interiors ensures that the wider public can easily access and enjoy this Hotel, while simultaneously create a comfortable place  for the appreciation of Doma Laukums and the surrounding historic buildings.

The overall aim is to ensure that this hotel fits well into the city urban landscape.

Plan concept

The idea is to utilize passivhus roof  and Solar power panels which will enhance the Green credentials of this Hotel.

There is an open terrace at Ground level on the west side that offers one a panoramic view of the main Square .The terrace is located in front of the main restaurant and bar  which will contribute enormously to this area.

The space inside the main restaurant creates a visual link between the entrance and the Doma Laukums.

It is possible that visitors can view and use this space from outside and have an idea of the Hotel’s function.

A maximum of modularity is foreseen for all the bedrooms (as prefabricated Module construction units) and a double height space of the restaurant space ensures maximum views to the exterior while giving the users and Hotel guests bright and generous daylighting.

Inside there is the 'Treffpunkt' or main meeting point, located between the reception and the entrance, an important meeting point from where the bar, reception, the entrance to the Restaurants and the Gym can easily be accessed.

Next to the Gym in the basement, one has the meeting rooms (both large and small) and which can be enlarged at will.

Overall it is possible here to add extra rooms to the hotel (see table) in order that the brutto factor is kept as low as possible.

Sustainability

This Hotel uses carbon-zero technology, making this building 100% sustainable, with various energy efficient devices that integrate this construction to the historic centre. The main concept is to provide an independent module based project that enhances the local chosen site rather than to exploit it.

Nature of materials

In accordance with the design concept, the essential prerequisites are that the structural framework shall have features which contribute to the immediate area and welcome the new visitors as well as the staff, offering everyone comfort and rest. The objective is to make this project as green as possible and to utilize the natural building materials effectively. The design of this assembly is envisaged in a such a way as to allow the constant visual connection to the outside, to the Doma Laukums and to the Tirgonu Iela nearby while simultaneously create a sense of comfort and joy at this four star Hotel.

The elevations

Beige coloured ceramic tiles envelop this Hotel creating a rhythm both on the western and northern sides. On the eastern elevation the intention is to continue the height of Tirgonu Iela building skyline in order to respect the scale of the Historic buildings nearby. Much of the inspiration for the building details came from the traditional local Architecture. On the western side, there is a stepping back effect of the building volume here that respects  Doma Laukums.

Light wells

The light wells have been inserted here to maximize daylighting into the basement in order to create comfort while one is exercising in the gym. At ground level the top of one of the light wells is fitted with frosted glass.

Construction

The ambition is to connect this Hotel to the immediate environment effectively. Assembled from steel framework construction, the concrete slabs will support the exterior ceramic tile cladding.

In essence, this project shall serve as an inspiration for future visitors and the local, staff who will desire to use the Hotel on the beautiful site.

The period of time required to construct this project will be short and the various module systems can easily be incorporated into this building.

In the final analysis, this Hotel offers the local inhabitants, the staff and the new visitors the opportunity to enjoy the views to Doma Laukums and the Historic town centre.
