BIRD's NEST: THE CONCEPT
Birds have an intrinsic worth and have throughout human history symbolized cultural values such as freedom and peace. In addition to the pleasure of observing them, we depend on them for important ecological benefits and they play a vital role in regenerating habitats such as pollination and dispersal of seeds. Therefore this tower is the perfect complement to the birds in the PAPE park.
The tower is a landmark , that has been designed sensitively to integrate into the surrounding landscape. The entrance to the towers is discreetly accessed by a spiral staircase below the three platforms and these platforms have been envisaged in such a manner so that no casted shadows of the bird watchers may disturb the birds. The tower is a robust single wooden column structure with secondary timber untreated fronts.
The tower platforms have been situated near the lake and opens over the meadows and the PAPE area.
One can observe the birds at close hand.
The tower is accompanied by a 50 meters long walking footbridge to the Bird observation tower nearby and the main concept is to emulate in style the bird's nest for all the structures. This approach will make the whole presence of the tower homes less intrusive and allow the bird watching to take place nearby without disturbing them.
Sedum layer to outer wall
The benefits in utilizing Sedum green layer are enormous, not only financially, but can endure longer than traditional roofs. The implementation of the green layer around these towers together with the round branches can act not only as a carbon sag, but as a stimulus to encourage the wildlife and biodiversity.
Grey water treatment
The main aim, in deepest respect to the surrounding water environment, is to contain, use and reuse all household grey water indoors and outdoors and which can be channeled into food production below and landscaping with no pollution of aquifers.
The proposal is to utilize the toilets too that flush with treated grey water and which do not smell.
Structure
The structure rests on a single large timber column construction and has several ring components ( prefabricated ) with glulam timber fins. The outer fins are then added with crafted branches placed around outside. The opportunity to grow some planting around this tower will contribute to a more fully integrated home in its natural surroundings.
Sustainability approach
Only local materials are to used. Branches and local twigs to be fixed onto the round outside fins. No artificial materials are to be used.
In essense, this micro organic home can serve as an inspiring prototype for future generations who desire to live in harmony with nature. The design is a serious attempt to reconnect with its natural environment and to reinforce the green credentials for wooden constructions. The period of construction will be short and can easily be assembled prior to its delivery on site, using prefabricated timber elements. The use of timber will produce a natural sustainable environment that will benefit everyone and Pape Nature Reserve.
